The UN declared June 21 as International Yoga Day after recognizing its appeal across the globe. The theme of this year’s Yoga Day, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is “Yoga for Health.” This theme was chosen because the organizers believe “that this approach to health and wellbeing can make a direct and useful contribution to humankind's quest to achieve sustainable development and move towards lifestyles that are in harmony with nature.”

“[Yoga] embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment, harmony between man and nature, and a holistic approach to health and well-being,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in 2014.

“Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and nature.”

The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.”
